Varuna is a Master of Health Science student in Clinical Biomedical Engineering at the Institute of Biomaterials and Biomedical Engineering, University of Toronto.
She is a research student with the Healthcare Human Factors Group, and is currently investigating the effects of interruptions on the delivery of high-risk medical procedures such as chemotherapy administration. Her Master’s thesis, under the supervision of Dr. Patricia Trbovich, will design, test, and assess the efficacy of strategies to mitigate the harmful effects of these interruptions in an effort to improve patient safety.
Varuna graduated with a Bachelor of Applied Science (Hon.) in Materials Engineering with a minor in Bioengineering from the University of Toronto. Some of her previous research work includes validating software tracking organ motion during radiation therapy for cancer treatment, and developing peptide mimics of zebra mussel adhesion proteins for the purpose of creating strong engineering adhesives.
